In Ayurveda dates are considered a ‘superfood’ because they are both Sattvic (promote peace in the mind) and directly nourish Ojas (the essence of our immune system). They are considered a nutritive tonic for the body – energising for the tissues and immune system. But they are also considered heavy and difficult to digest so eating just 1 or 2 a day is more than sufficient, otherwise they may overtax your Agni. Dates are often used as medicine in depleted plasma tissue (rasa dhatu) conditions and are also used as a tonic in the case of lung (pranavaha srota) problems. They are also useful in the case of low libido or infertility, helping to nourish and invigorate sexual reproductive tissues (shukra dhatu).

Medicinal uses of Dates fruits

Date palm fruits has antiviral, antifungal, antioxidant, antihyperlidimic (lowers lipid) and the liver protecting properties. They are rich in antioxidant and protect against free radical damage. They are natural source of vitamins such as riboflavin, biotin, thiamine, ascorbic and folic acid, and minerals calcium, iron, copper, cobalt magnesium, fluorine, manganese, phosphorus, potassium, sodium, boron, sulfur, zinc and selenium. Date fruits have neuroprotective and antioxidant property due to which they protect brain.

In many important Ayurvedic formulation dates are used as an ingredients. Example of such medicines are Drakshadi churna, Ealdi Modaka, Eladi Gutika, Shiva gutika Laghu, etc.

From an Ayurvedic perspective, dates have the following qualities…

Rasa: Sweet

Virya: Cooling

Vipaka: Sweet

Qualities: Heavy, Energizing

Actions on the doshas: Balance Vata & Pitta, increase Kapha in excess

Action on the mind: Sattvic

A superfood for the body and skin, Date Palm serves as a nutritive tonic which energizes the immune system, as it is a powerhouse of vitamins, minerals and magnesium. The presence of Vitamins A, C, K, B3, B5, B6, makes Date Palm a great rejuvenating ingredient which is widely used in natural skincare products, to revive and renew skin cells by cleansing the skin pores. Thereby relieving the skin from issues like acne, scars and other unwanted spots. Magnesium helps increase the anti-inflammation properties of Date Palm and thus, it soothes and calms inflamed skin. Enriched with antioxidants, it has the ability to protect the skin cells from harmful effects of environmental radicals and helps in slowing down the aging process by reducing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.

KHARJUR LADDOO

Ingredients Quantity

  • Kharjur (dates) – 250 gm
  • Cashew – 10
  • Badaam (almonds) – 10
  • Grated dry coconut (optional)- 100 gm
  • Total quantity: 10 to 12 laddoos

Method of preparation

Separate seeds from the dates and cut in small pieces. Cut the cashew and almonds also in small pieces and slightly roast in the pan with 2 spoons of ghee. Now mix the kharjur pieces in pan and roast for 3-5 minutes. Take out all the mixture from the pan and make small sized laddoos and roll it over the grated coconut.

Roasted sesame seeds or khas khas (poppy seeds) may be used instead of coconut.

Health benefits

Date laddoos are highly nutritious, which contain fiber and antioxidants and therefore useful for maintenance of good health. It can work as energy booster in fatigue specifically for weak, pregnant women and during convalescent period.

Precautions

Not advisable for diabetics.
